Is being a Pediatric nurse good for somebody who was initially an education major?

I'm finishing up my 4th year in college I am a junior! Would it be wise to change majors at this point. Only pre-nursing program available at the university I go. Approximately how many more years until I start seeing the light at the end of the road haha.Is being a Pediatric nurse good for somebody who was initially an education major?
Hi Stacies Mom,

I would strongly advise against changing majors at this point. Nursing may take you four years full-time if you switch. To begin with, nursing is a technical major, the courses need to be taken in sequence, and it requires that you are licensed before you can become a nurse. In addition from your posting it indicates that you have at best only met some of the general education requirements for the major. Even if you go for the the two year associates degree program it will take you probably three years to complete full-time. The two year program can be in high demand and sometimes you have to wait a year before you can start. Plus the two years is an intensive two years in which you may be carrying a very heavy academic load and if you spread out the load you are looking again probably four years to complete.

Another issue you may encounter since you are doing pre-nursing is you do not meet the requirements for admission. Each nursing has specific requirements before you enter the nursing sequence and they also have minimum GPA(s) that need to be met. If you do not meet the requirements for entrance then you will not be admitted. Also in your question that you mentinon that the university only offers pre-nursing and this implies to me you would have to attend elsewhere. Are you prepared to move or travel if you are accepted?

This brings me to the next point of employment. Your education major seems to be art or maybe foreign language. However your interest in nursing suggest indicates ability for science? Have you considered teaching biology, chemistry, or mathematics at the high school level instead? Reason for this suggestion is that art teachers tend not be in big demand for schools. It is not to say that you there are no jobs for art teachers but from an employment perspective the demand for science or math teachers is much higher. At least this way you are staying with in your field of ecuation and the time needed maybe less.Is being a Pediatric nurse good for somebody who was initially an education major?
If time needed to complete your degree and distance are consideration for you then I would recommend bi-lingual education, not nursing. I would only recommend nursing if you are willing to invest the time and money into doing it.

No, if time. If I switch to bilingual it'll take the same as nursing because I have not taken any of the early child pre reqs since I was initially going for high school level.

Wise? What would be really unwise is majoring in education if that's not the field that fits you! Go talk to a college counselor! Find out exactly what you would need for a nursing degree. You might even need to change schools. But changing might not be as bad as you think, because you might be able to count your education courses as electives.

You might even decide to be a school nurse, in which case your education courses could be an advantage!
