What major changes were brought about by the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution?

What major changes did each bring about in its country of origin (France and Britain, respectively), and beyond its borders? Why were these changes important?

How did these changes contribute to the emergence of revolution in most of continental Europe in 1848?What major changes were brought about by the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution?
Hello,

Here are the major effects of the French revolution:

The French Revolution was a turning point in French and even to world history.

It was the first time a population revolted against the Monarchy and established a Republic.

Until today, a lot of texts and symbols remain from this glorious time.

France is still using:

-The French constitution called the ';Declaration of the rights of man and citizen'; written by the revolutionaries in 1789.

- The French flag created in 1789.

- The Marseillaise, France National anthem, written in 1792.

- The Republic (even if Napoleon ruined it after the Revolution), people of France had a taste of freedom in 1792.

- The French motto, written in every city hall France since the Revolution: ';Liberty, Equality, Fraternity';.

Here is a good website on the French Revolution http://bastille-day.com

Cheers.

    Hello Las Vegas:

You have a wealth of life experience that eclipses anything the newbies right out of college would have to offer.

Focus is the key to this one. Stick with what you know, but with a twist. You say you know PCs. Inside and out. There are lots of job in Finance that don't require ';schooling';. Don't waste your money on technical schools. You'll learn faster by doing, and get paid for it.

In this market, age is an advantage. As a person almost 50, you have a solid work ethic and represent more stability to an employer than a younger applicant. You no longer need to be entertained at work, you understand the importance of doing a job well and completely, and can probably work unsupervised for long periods of time. Right? These are the kinds of things that need to go on your resume.

Next, look for a job that's tech-related, but in Finance. You can pick up a basic Accounting book at the library and learn the terminology. You know how to balance a check book, make payments, figure out what your balance is on an invoice? That makes you an Accounts Payable clerk! Know how to find a bargain online, negotiate a price, or secure a service? That's purchasing! Get your training by registering with several employment agencies that specialize in entry level Accounting jobs. Most employers will appreciate the life experience and are willing to train you on their systems. Be a sponge and learn, learn, learn everything you can about their software. The best part is you get paid for all this.

Making a change is not easy, but with the right job sources it can be done. Don't expect to make a $100K your first year. A steady income is more important that the get rich quick schemes out there. Be patient. An entry level person in Accounting earns about $35K a year.

That's better than unemployment and better than $0.

Your resume has to reflect the skills you've developed over the years and stay focused on the Finance objective.

    Good luck in your search.

Has anyone else felt this way about their future- college major and beyond?

I am 16 and will only be a junior next year but am really worried. Many people looking back will say they knew since they were young what they wanted to be. A doctor, a lawyer, a writer, it seems they all knew. I honestly DON'T know. I wanted to be a History major, then I became obsessed with Primordial Dwarfism and wanted to be a Geneticist but they work too many hours and college would be too long, so I went back to my History major idea and decided to major in English as well so I could be a historical writer. Yesterday, I thought it might be cool to be a Marine Biologist.

I don't have a passion; except for reading I suppose, but I don't really think I want to be an author or a journalist.

I want to be a Historian because I feel so happy and safe at Museums, as weird as that sounds.

I want to be an Astronomer because the Planatarium and the stars and the moon make me feel calm.

I fear that if I make a last minute decision before college and then decide I don't want to do it, I ruined my life. I know people change majors all the time but I won't be able to afford that.

How did you know your major choice was right? Did you feel your whole future was on the line? If you never had a passion for anything, how did you choose a major?Has anyone else felt this way about their future- college major and beyond?
A lot of people feel that way. I'd recommend going to a community college for your first two years. That way you'll get your gen eds out of the way without paying thousands more than you have to, and you can figure out then which classes you like enough to keep taking. Or talk to your counselor; that's what they're there for.Has anyone else felt this way about their future- college major and beyond?
There would be ways to afford it if you changed majors. Some courses you took could be applied to your new choice of degree. I love your interest in EVERYTHING! You may find that your education isn't a real passion but pays the bills and you have hobbies that are your real passion. Many roads lead to Rome.
I dont know what I want to do still. When I applied to college I applied undeclared to most and chose something that sounded interesting for the others. Now I am going to community college in the mean time to figure it out. Its normal. Its not like 18 is the natural age that people find their passions. Its just kinda forced upon us. Some people dont find their niche until theyre much older while some are lucky enough to find it young.

Btw Im a history buff too woohoo!
Seems like you're not too sure about what you wanna do.. Historian.. Geneticist.. English major.. Astronomer..

First girl, don't worry too too much about money. Money is a big part of college but college is an investment. So money aside, college is about finding out what you want to do in life and finding what you're really good at.

There are two types of college students. Those who know exactly what they are going to do in life, who have it all planned out and those who are figuring out what to do. Which remember that's part of what college is. People who change their major are the people who don't know for sure what they are doing.

I'm transferring to A %26amp; M in the fall and have everything planned out. I am going to go to med school after graduating. I have taken anatomy and am totally in love with it. I love learning about the human body and always share what I learn with my parents and boyfriend and friends but I am totally open to the possibility that along the way something might not go right and I may become a teacher or somthing.

When you get to college your first year you should take different classes you think are interesting. For example, I took a psychology class because I thought I wanted to minor in it but it was so incredibly boring, I still got an A so it wouldn't hurt my GPA but I figured it wasn't for me. So take english, history, maybe astronomy if your school has that and genetics or biology and see what you like.

Hope I helped. And don't think that if you don't have every single second after high school planned you're going to fail in life because you're going to do great.
Make sure you major in something that will actually help you get a job, because unless you are trust fund baby you will need to support yourself.
The university I'm at currently has a major choice as ';Discovery Major'; where you can take survey classes to figure out what you want to do. Find something you like doing, not necessarily a passion, but just something you find interesting and intriguing. You aren't screwing yourself over by not having a major as a junior in high school. I know a bunch of people who don't know what their major is and they are seniors in college!

How bad of an idea is it to switch my major in my senior year?

I've been undecided about my major pretty much the entire time I've been in school. I finally settled on management with a concentration in accounting and swore that i wouldn't change majors again but even though I like accounting, I'm not too happy with it. I never considered nursing before because I used to say I would have to be a doctor if i went into the medical field. Ive taken the time to learn more about nursing lately and I think I would love it. SinceI changed my major several times before, it will probably take me an extra year to graduate. I was thinking to finish my degree than enroll into an accelerated BSN program but I'm really anxious to start working. So is it bad idea to switch majors now and to start over? How bad of an idea is it to switch my major in my senior year?
If you have the time and money to spend, and you are confident in the choice you are making, then go for it. But, at this stage in the game, don't make a decision like that unless you are very, very sure of yourself.

Help with deciding to stick with major or not?

I can't find a major/career that really draws me in. I started in Electrical Engineering. After, a semester(and observing) I knew that's not what I wanted to do my whole life. I changed to computer science. I completed one CS course. I liked it for the most part, but still when it came to class it was far from something I enjoyed. Started my second semester of it last week and when I'm in class I just feel like no matter how hard I study and try the concepts are over my head. I feel like the teacher complicates things even more by using bigger words in describing his concepts and theories and its just not enjoyable to me.

I don't want to change majors because the job opportunities after seem like things I'd like. But if I can't do the courses maybe something else is more appropriate for me? I don't have anything in mind though...can someone please help?Help with deciding to stick with major or not?
you were probably meant to teach...no offense....

I stated out a comp sci major, after a year of busting my butt and getting average grades, I switched to physics education...Im much more happier...

How long did it take for you to graduate from college? how many times did you change your major? hmmm!?

during which college year did you finally decide on your major? How long did it take for you to graduate from college? how many times did you change your major? hmmm!?
It took me 5 years. I never officially declared a major until I decided on Finance. But I thought about engineering before I picked Finance. Looking back, it wasnt a great decision -- I'm not interested in money, I care more about public policy, so I'm going back for a master's in what I'm really interested in.How long did it take for you to graduate from college? how many times did you change your major? hmmm!?
I decided my major during my 2nd year, and I will graduate in 4.5 years.
    3 years, once!
It took me 5 years, I changed majors 1 time. I decided not to be a firefighter, and chose to study history after the first year, with a double major in Social Science. Its ok to switch it up though, you are the one that has to find the job after school....
I knew my major going right into college. I never changed, and graduated in just over 4 years.
It took me 10 years because my children were 6, 3 1/2, and 18 mths when I started. I took one semester off early on, then a year off attempting to get into a professional program. I did and am very proud to have made it in 10 years! Never changed my major. Decided on major maybe 2 or 3 years after starting out.
I changed my major once, from fashion design to animal science. I started college in 1992, and still have a year. Course I too 8 years off. Hey, it is really hard to do it when you go it alone.
I will graduate from college next year. I changed my major during high school but sticking with it throughout college. I decided on it my first year.
I have two degrees one in Engineering. This was a three year course at Imperial London.

My second degree is a masters in Business Studies. This took one rather intensive year.

In UK we have to decide before going to College / University which course we wish to study.

Apart from some limited choices on electives the subject matter is heavily focused on the subject of the degree.

There are usually options / different course one can study but all within the same general field. In my case Mechanical Engineering for my first degree.

Understand in US you have the opportunity to study at degree level several subjects and therefore can decide fairly late on which will be your degree subject or 'Major'.

Sounds good. You get a good all round education.
5 years for a BA. I spent five years because I changed my major from the Administration of Criminal Justice to a Business Management degree. After a long career in the military I decided I was to old to be a cop after my second year of college and had to do another year to make up for the change of heart.
Three majors Three colleges Two states and nine years to get my degree. I did not go straight through took some time off in between. I decided in my fourth year on my last and final major but i was not able to go full time for awhile so it still took five more years after that. Just graduated three weeks ago Magnum CumLaude

  • College major advice please?

It's my second semester as a junior in college and my major is Human Biology.

My problem is that I no longer love biology like I once did. I used to really enjoy it but since the previous semester I just stopped liking it. Now I know it's too late to change majors.

Right now, all the classes I'm taking are just a burden and I dislike every one of them. I'm having a hard time studying and paying attention because I just don't like them anymore.

How do I enjoy this field of study once more? Is this a normal feeling once you get closer to the end?

Thanks for any advice.College major advice please?
Firstly, thank you so much for your answer to my question, it was really good.

secondly%26lt; the best advice i can give you for your answer is stop taking biology if you dont have interest in it anymore. its never too late. do somehing that makes you feel happy, therefore you will always have passion for it.College major advice please?
90% of graduates don't apply their undergraduate subject degree to their job -- the 10% are the very technical engineers, computer sci, etc.

I got a BS in Biochemistry, became an Air Force logitics officer and now an operations manager for a Fortune-30 company. No relation there except I have a piece of paper (read: Bachelor in any subject) that makes me 'eligible' for the positions I took.

Do something you want to learn more about to apply in life. If unsure and you can handle math (I assume since you like sciences), go accounting, finance or business management. In the business sector, we speak $$$ and how to spend less and make more--nobody cares what allele gave the mouse red eyes, or at what temperatue a DNA strand unwinds and what shape it will rebind into at 65 degrees.

If I had a chance to redo and pick again, I would have chosen nutrition, finance, or accounting.

As a reference point, I'm 28 years old. I want to say it is NEVER too late to change majors--you are overdue making a change and taking control when you start feeling regret. I finished my Bachelor at 18 and stayed a 5th year just to party it up and get that social experience. My parents freaked out, but it was the best decision ever.
Talk to your teacher about it good luck x

    Computer science major...?

im just finishing my first year in college as a computer science major and i like what i have learned so far that has to do with my major. i've been into this major for a while, but i've heard many stories from people saying bad things about it. Mainly that many might enjoy the programming at first but that it gets old really fast. and that many decide to change major.

from my point of view now, i dont really believe that because having a cs degree opens the door to a wide variety of different jobs.

But i want to get advice from someone who has a degree in cs. i want to know whats it like... and how you view your job. Do you enjoy your job? Is there a lot of different job opportunities?Computer science major...?
Well, you could get bogged down in some commercial stuff, like writing code for Amazon or E-bay. Sounds like good pay and lots of boredom. I personally like process control applications. That will require some education in the business of interfacing the computer to the real world, but the things to do out there are real challenges. How about flying an airplane that has no control cables to the wing surfaces, just wires or maybe fiber optics? Could you do a nuclear reactor system? Roll hot steel? Age wine? There is a ton of fascinating stuff to do out there, but the business world is pretty boring.Computer science major...?
What aspects of computer science do you enjoy?

One CAN pursue a career in programming without a computer science degree. I worked for most of my adult life as a computer programmer/systems analyst and my degree was in accounting.

Of course getting my first real programming position was a bit tough, but once I had it, pretty much everyone agreed that my skill set was actually better for the kinds of work we were doing than a pure computer science degree would have been.

Personally I found the programming aspects of my job to be the most engaging but as I got more and more senior I did less and less of that and more of the managing and planning while others got to do the ';fun stuff';.

I consider myself very lucky to have found a job that I liked so much. It was also very rewarding monetarily, so much so that I'm able to choose NOT to work now. I do feel confident that I could get back into the workforce if I really wanted to but am enjoying my early retirement way too much for that.

Switching Majors and Schools Sophomore Year of College?

I am currently going to a smaller, private school in a different state and majoring in Communications. Because of scheduling conflicts, I wasn't able to really discover my major that much, and ended up taking mostly general ed. courses freshman year. Now I am about to enter my second year of college, and want am seriously thinking about changing my major to architecture. Of course I will give Comm. a chance this semester, but I will also apply to schools for a transfer in Spring.

    The bottom line is this:

I want to stay in louisville, kentucky (where I currently go to school) and quite possibly change my major, thereby changing schools. However, my parents want me to come back home if I change schools... How can I convince them to change schools and majors and still stay in the same area? Also, will it be to late to change majors after sophomore year since there is such a dramatic difference in my majors?Switching Majors and Schools Sophomore Year of College?
You can always change your major, you might just have to stay longer which is a problem for some people. Also, you're in college now. Try to explain to your parents as best as you can why you are making this decision. What is convincing you to stay? If they are paying for part or all of your college education then convincing them might be harder but you need to show them that you're making an informed decision. If you're not making an informed decision, it's going to be harder.Switching Majors and Schools Sophomore Year of College?
There shouldn't be a problem with switching your major because your first 2 years of college is just general studies like math, science, and english, etc. So don't worry about that. If you wait until after your junior year however, and switch you'll be in college an extra year.
If you start architecture now, you will be behind. Architecture, like nursing or engineering, is one of those majors that track differently from liberal arts majors. Your first two years aren't, in fact, spent on general education requirements. Most architecture programs take a solid four to five years to complete, and it's important, in terms of your being able to be licensed, for you to attend a school accredited by NAAB: the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

Still, it's not as if you've really lost two full years. A lot of the general courses you've taken are required, and will transfer, which will help. And if you can take a course or two over the summer, you may catch up, more or less. This is something you'll need to discuss with transfer admission at your new school.

Generally speaking, you need to get a degree from a NAAB accredited school in order to meet the educational qualifications necessary to take the Architectural Registration Exam. In Kentucky, your only option is at the University of Kentucky.

Some students may graduate from a non-accredited program and then complete an accredited MArch program. There are certain things you need in order to be admitted to such a program, so check the site at U of Kentucky and find out what they, as one example, need.

I'll give you some links, below, which will be useful.

If you do want to be an architect, your best option is to transfer as soon as you can. In that way, you'll be able to start the architecture coursework asap, and thus graduate sooner.

There will be other transfer students in your class, and there will be quite a few students at university who take longer than four years to graduate - especially transfer students. If you really want to be an architect, don't let the extra time hold you back. Apply, and work hard, and you'll end up where you want to be.

    Good luck.

  • Changing Major at UCLA??????

I was accepted into Aerospace engineering at UCLA for fall 2008, and now I am having second thoughts about going in to engineering. Is it easy to change majors out of the school of engineering? How would I go about doing that?Changing Major at UCLA??????
The thing about declaring a major is that usually what you want to do when you are a senior in high school and what you want to do once you've actually started taking classes, and the school knows that. Therefore its not difficult to change. I know a lot of people who changed majors within the school of engineering.

I am a sophmore if i change my major from Sociology to psychology how what year you think I'll finish college?

You'll probably be fine. Some people don't decide on a major until junior year and graduate in four years. It's likely that you still have time to meet all the requirements for a new major, and it's possible that some of the courses you have already taken will qualify for psychology major requirements. Regardless, the courses you have already taken will count towards your 120 needed for graduation.I am a sophmore if i change my major from Sociology to psychology how what year you think I'll finish college?
I think it depends on how many classes you have already taken, need take, and if any sociology classes can be used in the psychology major.

    Friend keeps changing major?

I'm trying to tell my best friend she really needs to stop taking unnecessary classes and changing her major (wasting time and money). She jokes to others about how she lives off of fin aid (apparently wasting others money, and 12,00/yr isn't s%#t to me). I wanted to know is there a deadline that after so many credits or dropping classes that fin aid stop giving you funds for school? Has this ever happen to anybody?Friend keeps changing major?
Some people just go to school just for the refund checks. If a student is at a 4 year school, that student can only receive pell for so many semesters/quarters before it is gone for life.

However, if they received pell prior to 2007, they can receive pell pretty much forever as long as they meet the qualifications and do not earn a bach or higher degree.

Now, there is a new law now that puts limits on how long and often students can receive pell.

If she is living off of student loans, eventually she will recieve the lifetime maximum and be forced to start paying it back or no longer be eligible for financial aid until she pays it under the undegrad limit, which I think is around 60,000.

Everything else WILL expire though. No scholarship or other grants are last forever.

I would tell your friend if she is not interested in finishing, tell her to just get a job instead. Eventually she is going to get tired of school if not going anywhere.

    Major Book of Mormon change?

The book of Mormon just changed. Before anybody says it was ones persons opinion its something that the church has been teaching for decades. This is what I was taught before I was baptized. Here is the change.

    ';After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians.';

The new BOM will state this?

    ';After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.';

What does this change? Everything every missionary has taught. For the first time the LDS church is quietly agreeing they were not in America first. They are admitting others were here first. They just joined in.

What does it mean? I don檛 know. What does it mean to you? Why did they just change it without any announcement to a major change in how we were taught to believe, they just had General Conference. Why did the publisher know before the members?Major Book of Mormon change?
    Bruce R. McConkie, a now deceased world-wide leader of the Mormon Church, said this in 1966: ';The American Indians, however, as Columbus found them also had other blood than that of Israel in their veins. It is possible that isolated remnants of the Jaredites may have lived through the period of destruction in which millions of their fellows perished. It is quite apparent that groups of orientals found their way over the Bering Strait and gradually moved southward to mix with the Indian peoples. We have records of a colony of Scandinavians attempting to set up a settlement in America some 500 years before Columbus. There are archaeological indications that an unspecified number of groups of people probably found their way from the old to the new world in pre-Colombian times. Out of all these groups would have come the American Indians as they were discovered in the 15th century.';

It's easy to ';debunk'; Mormon beliefs when you simplify those beliefs and/or misrepresent them. The truth is many Mormons have been speculating for decades that ';Israelites'; were not the principal ancestors of the American Indians.

It is not true that ';every Mormon missionary'; teaches that Israelites are the principal ancestors of the American Indians. I did not teach it, for I did not believe it.

If you are still LDS and questioning something like this is going to cause you to question your beliefs then you are looking for a reason to get out. If you are solid in what you believe then you should not have a desire to put others down for theirs. Go find the truth for yourself. Pray about it.

This was done because of the recent DNA evidence that proves that original statement FALSE.

So after enough buzz got round the leaders ears and members started to get curious or wonder,etc....they changed it and now act as if its always been that way.

Another way to keep the members ';happy and unquestioning the doctrine';.
Intro or BOM, does it matter? So you argue that one was translated by God, the other just thrown in by man? If this is the case, what other doctrines are just doctrines of men and not of God? If they are merely of men, why have prophets (are they not supposed to be the mouthpiece for God)? Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to open discussion. How does one know which doctrines are correct and which ones are not?

I've been taught to believe there is right and there is wrong. I do not believe right and wrong change. Yet doctrines/statements seem to change on a regular basis.

The problem is, one can either argue that the works are inspired of God, or that man has made a mistake (in his works). But it is very difficult to argue that the works are God's, but man made a mistake. Why would God allow a mistake in doctrine, when the very salvation of everyone is reliant on these principals?

Finally, to argue that the change is made because of our new knowledge does not make sense. These works are supposed to be inspired of God. Are you saying that God is not all knowing? The understanding of man should not matter if that man is a mouthpiece for God.

This is more a response to other answers than the question. To the Mormons on here. I was one of you for 29 years. I was the most stalwart seminary student. I served a full time mission. I was in the Elders Quorom Presidency and I taught sunday school. You can't honestly tell these people that the church never taught that the American Indians descended from the Lamanites, because you and I both know that is exactly what the church has taught. And the Introduction to the BoM is not the only place. Go to LDS.org and search the word Lamanite among Ensign articles. You will find several talks given at General Conference by General Authorities that refer to Native Americans as Lamanites. You will find other articles in the Ensign that do the same. If you look in the D%26amp;C you will find several times when Joseph Smith calls people to serve a mission ';among the Lamanites'; and he wasn't talking about going back in time. So not only have several prophets referred to the Native Americans as Lamanites. They also approved other people teaching the same thing. Everything in the Ensign is printed ';Under the Direction of the First Presidency'; The intro was written by Bruce R. McKonkie ';Under the Direction of the First Presidency'; not to mention that as an apostle, Bruce R. McKonkie was ordained as a ';Prophet, Seer, and Revelator.'; If he was a prophet, and given the task of writing an intro to ';The most true book on the face of the Earth'; then why wouldn't he have the revelation needed to know that the Lamanites were not the ';Primary Anscestors'; of the American Indians? Why were we taught in Seminary that the intro was also considered scripture, along with anything the General Authorities say today? This is not a small change. It is a huge change in taught doctrine, that the church was hoping to just slip in without people noticing.

Trust me, I understand what it is like to keep trying to defend your religion all the while thinking to yourself that maybe it doesn't make sense afterall. Only when you TRULY open your mind and look at ALL the evidence out there, and not just that which the church approves for you to look at, can you know the truth. And it will be easy to pick out the stupid people who attack the church with ignorant myths, from the real inconvenient TRUTH about the church. Real truth can withstand any criticism. The Mormon church's ';truth'; cannot. I truly believe that many Mormons out there can't let go because they are affraid like I was that the church they gave so much to is a fraud. They are also affraid of how they will be treated by their friends and family who are still in the church. They are affraid they will be labeled sinners, and apostates for leaving. But I hope they realize someday as I have, that being true to yourself is far more important than how others see you. Mormons, please take this as an oppurtunity to really research your faith. To do that you MUST read more than just what the Mormon church gives you. If the church really is true, there isn't anything out there that you can read, that would disprove it. If there is even one thing that disproves it, then the church is not true. Please open you mind, and learn for yourself.
The publisher got directions from the angel Moroni of where to find a set of amended gold tablets, along with a brand new Urim and Thumim with which to translate them, obviously.
    Principal means most important.

    http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/principal
What does it change? Nothing... does the new version say that they aren't the principle ancestors, no? It could simply as be seen as taking as backing away from something that has lead to contention, so people can focus on the main teachings of the Book of Mormon which are teachings about Christ. I do not know if this is officially why the LDS church made the change, but it makes sense to me.

It is VERY important to note that the change is to the cover page NOT the Book of Mormon itself which was translated by the power of God.
First, it's not the Book of Mormon that changed, it's the introduction or whatever.

Second, it's changed to reflect new light and knowledge that we have. Joseph Smith didn't know for sure, and now we know that the Lamanites were not the only people that the native American Indians could have descended from. And careful study of the Book of Mormon itself shows this. The Book of Mormon itself does not say that the Lehites were the ONLY people in the entire western hemisphere, and iti does not say that the Lamanites were the ONLY people that the current native American Indians could have descended from.
It's not the Book of Mormon. It's the intro and it's not major. GET YOUR HATE STRAIGHT!
Asked and Answered -- however this version makes more sense and it is not part of the translated text -- it was McConckies addition that is being revised (changed, updated, corrected).

    Not a problem.

    D
First of all you need to know a couple of things. This change is in the introduction of the BOM. This was written in 1981, based on what what known at the time. The church has never had the official position that Lehi and his family were the only people (or the first) that came to the America's. Heck the BOM talks about 2 other groups that came over. No doctrine or principles of the gospel changed. really its a correction that clarifies the churches position. FYI, there have been grammatical changes over the years that most people haven't noticed.

The Book Of Mormaon is still Another Testament of Jesus Christ

To the asker: The BOM does not make the point that everyone was killed off except the Lamanites. Its referring to the two different nations that came off from Father Lehi. The writers in the Book of Mormon knew nothing of other people in the western hemisphere so when it says they were all destroyed it was talking about the people in the book of mormon not the other unknown peoples. All this change does is more clearly show the churches position.
I'm Native American (among other things); the notion that Mormons were my ancestors is just plain laughable.

I want to change my major... What do you think?

I currently am majoring in Business Administration. But I am bored with it. I am able to transfer and start on my upper division part at a university. But I now want to change to Veterinary Medicine. I love animals and am really good with them. I know how hard it is going but i think it would be fun. What do you guys think i should do....Change my major or stick with business?

Also if any of you are veterinarians what do you think about your job and any advice?I want to change my major... What do you think?
The most important thing is picking a degree that you are going to be able to live with. Be sure that this new degree is what you want. If it is then you should still at least see if you have completed a associates degree in business management so you can take something away from the schooling you have already completed.

    good luck with the work

dbI want to change my major... What do you think?
Volunteer in the field you are interested in before switching...it will save both time and money...make sure you get some firsthand knowledge on it before making the drastic decision...call a vet and ask if you can visit and observe. It never hurts to ask. I changed my major after doing this and am glad that I evaluated the career before making the switch.

    Good luck.

    http://how2savemunnyhunny.blogspot.com/
You'll likely have to take the prerequisite classes in science before you can apply for vet school. Excellent grades are required in those classes with a high overall GPA. Other evidence of your desire to help animals is necessary (volunteer at an animal shelter; work as a vet assistant for a clinic). Good people skills are also a necessary part of your being accepted to the Vet Schools.

Years ago, I was in a similar position. I was bored to tears with the Bus. Admin. classes and enjoyed the required science class I was taking! I changed my major to biology and stayed in higher education as a community college instructor for 39 years! So even if you don't make it into vet med school, getting a degree in zoology or related fields will probably more satisfying than plodding through the very lucrative business field! You probably won't get rich in science or vet. medicine!
The last thing you want is a major in something you hate. If you are only a sophmore, then you have plenty of time to switch. Take into consideration that vet medicine will need graduate, phd degrees, so you will be in school for a longer period of time.
If you are bored with business after only a few years of study, imagine how unhappy you would be by the time you were ready to retire! Now is the time in your life to search and explore and figure out what you're passionate about. The thing that sparks your interest, that you can see yourself doing as a career and enjoying, is the one that is worth pursuing. Veterinary Medicine will be a lot of work and it's a very competitive field, but if you're prepared and willing to put forth the effort, then there's no reason not to go for it.
That's a huge difference. Veterinary medicine is incredibly difficult and vet schools are very difficult to get into.

However, if it is your dream and if you can get excellent grades in the sciences, go for it.

You may want to transfer to a school that has a vet program as you'll have a better chance of getting into vet school if you live or can claim residency in the state where the vet school is
Take it from someone who has switched majors 3 times, make sure you are doing what you want to be doing, being a veterinary requires a lot of school after undergrad so look at that too. If that is what you are really interested in then go for it. Don't worry if it will take longer to complete. With business you can get a lot of boring jobs in an office, so if that is what you want to do then go for that. Also if you haven't taken chemistry and biology classes you will have to take them and more upper level courses in science and math, so if those aren't your strong subjects I wouldn't switch. What it all comes down to is what you see yourself doing in the future if it is something in an office go with business if you want to work with animals more instead of people then go with veterinary medicine. Good luck!:)

    For instance, people used to say ';I be....'; or ';She be...';

How did that get changed to ';I am...'; and ';She is...';?

I have other examples, but that's what I came up with first. I'm intrigued to figure out how such a change would come about. How do major changes in the written/spoken language come about?

The english language has gotten many influences and that's why words or sayings change through time.
Well my guess is that, as soon as a phrase becomes popular among the population orally, they somehow become accepted by the society and end up in the dictionary

How do global events affect business such as airlines and supermarkets?

How do global events affect business such as airlines and supermarkets? This could be:

    ?Stock market fluctuations

    ?Currency exchange rate changes

?Major business bankruptcies e.g. of US banks

    ?War %26amp; terrorism

    ?Disease

    ?Climate change and natural disasters

?Environmental issues and agreements to deal with themHow do global events affect business such as airlines and supermarkets?
it depends on the direct correlation of the events to the industry. for example, a global recession will affect the profits of these industries. however, an oil spill in the gulf like we have currently will not likely affect the airline business. it just depends. however, if an event is truly global, chances are there will be collateral benefits or damage that will trickle to other industries. lets take the example of oil. a war in the mid east might push oil prices high. when that happens, aviation fuel becomes expensive, and so does water and milk because they are transported on trucks which require fuel. therefore, a trickle effect will be reflected in higher prices for airline tickets and supermarket bills for consumers

In Pride and Prejudice, how does Elizabeth change from the beginning of the novel to the end?

What is the major change she undergoes and what are some specific events in the book where its noticable she is beginning to change? PLEASE HELP ! thank you !In Pride and Prejudice, how does Elizabeth change from the beginning of the novel to the end?
One way she changes is to recognize that first impressions are not necessarily accurate. She dislikes Mr. Darcy on first meeting him and likes Mr. Wickham. In other words, she completely misjudges the character of both. Her prejudice is due to the fact that she was slighted by Mr. Darcy at the Meryton Ball and flattered by Mr. Wickham at her aunt's party. In fact, Mr. Wickham had singled her out of all the other young ladies and talked to her (even later telling...supposedly...only she his secret) even though every other lady was wild for him and wanted his attention.

You really see the change in Elizabeth after she reads Mr. Darcy's letter (which takes place after the proposal at Charlotte's new home). In this letter he explains the real nature of Mr. Wickham's character (among other things), and when she does Mr. Darcy the justice to believe he's telling the truth, she is mortified at her own lack of judgment and the prejudice she's been harboring against Mr. Darcy and the accusations (false she now knows) she hurled at Mr. Darcy.

She has to reevaluate her perceptions of these two men and readjust her ideas. She realizes now some inconsistencies in Mr. Wickham's professions to her and that his actions do not fall in line with his words. She also realizes that though Wickham has the appearance of goodness that Darcy seems to lack, it is Mr. Darcy who has all the goodness.

You see how her past prejudices are done away...slowly. For instance she tells Jane about Mr. Darcy's proposal and letter (in so far as it relates to Wickham), and you see a decided change in Elizabeth's feelings.

Then when Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner take her to Pemberley and she meets Mr. Darcy for the first time since her visit to the Collins' house, she sees him clearly and knows he is without any haughtiness or snobbery. Her feelings for Mr. Darcy change a great deal at Pemberley. She moves from respect and gratitude for his forgiveness of her for her accusations to liking and esteem and then to love.

This is actually only a small part of what you see in Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice, but hopefully it will help. You can read P%26amp;P here http://www.online-literature.com/austen/

If you need more information, you can find chapter summaries and more at http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/pride/In Pride and Prejudice, how does Elizabeth change from the beginning of the novel to the end?
Did you even read ANY of the book? The girl goes from being both proud and prejudiced (even though she thinks she is not judgmental), especially in terms of her opinions about Darcy, to seeing the good in him and gaining some humility. Basically she saw almost everything the wrong way until the end when her vision was cleared.

How do you change majors online at San Francisco state university?

Asked another obscure question on here and got a great answer, guess I'll try again.

I'm like 9 units from an English Lit BA at SFSU, but am registered as a Creative Writing major, of which I've taken taken a handful of classes. The English Seminar class I'm in and required by my BA only takes English majors, so I need to change it - right now I'm in the class and there's no issue, but I figure the sooner the better. My teacher told me I could do it through the Mysfsu system but didn't know exactly how, but she's hardly an authority.

Any help would be hugely appreciated! How do you change majors online at San Francisco state university?
I was in a similar situation three years ago. I have a few friends at SFSU. At any CSU, you cannot change your major online. If you were undeclared, you could sign up for a major online. But in your situation, you must meet with the department whose major you wish to change to. Be sure to fill out and bring a change and major form which you can probably find online. If approved, take the signed form to the Registrar and your major will be changed.

Be warned, though: if you have taken over 90 units, you may no longer be able to change your major. Check with your academic adviser if this is the case. How do you change majors online at San Francisco state university?

How much can someone's facial structure change on its own?

This isn't a problem I've personally had, but...

Obviously the human body goes through a variety of changes during a person's teenage years. But during that time period, can someone's facial structure go through significant changes? Obviously little things like eyes/nose appearing to change size, but I'm referring to the face shape as a whole.

    If so, to what degree?

Or are any major changes due to other things, such as a different fat distribution, etc?

ThanksHow much can someone's facial structure change on its own?
The obvious way to burn fat is to eat less and workout more, the difficulties appear when we really try to put that into practice! There are lots of temptations in the big wide world don't you think?! I found some excellent advice by checking out the site in the box below, they have lots of tips, I lost 9 pounds by following their techniques.

Will changing my major affect my fin aid?

Ok here is the deal. I am going to a community college so when I picked my major(chemical dependancy specialization) I did not need a whole lot of basics. I just needed comp 1 and 2 and 1 math class. So I jumped right into the other classes. Well I am in my 3 semester and I want to change majors. I had originally wanted to be a registered nurse but I heard all these horror stories about how the students practice on each other. But now I dont even care, I know that I want to be a nurse no matter what. Anyways my question is can I change my major and still receive my fin aid? I feel like I wasted all that money on the other classes and am afraid that I will not be able to receive anymore if I switch. I know every school is different, but just in general have you heard of this or anything like it? Thank so muchWill changing my major affect my fin aid?
If it's federal aid, it shouldn't. I went through four and a half years of school and quit when they upped my requirements (even after I showed them the contract stating they couldn't do that after you registered). I regrouped and totally changed my major...from music to business. I just finished up my Associate's, and they are allowing me to get my Bachelor's in something else...and then my masters, so it shouldn't effect anything.

Grants can vary from state to state...for instance, Pell is a federal grant and should not matter as they only pay so much and then they are done anyway. But, state run grants, you may also lose early. Loans, they will let your rack up until you finish a degree...no doubling (in other words, you can't go for two bachelors or two associates).

Other than that, I don't foresee a problem...your first two years of college, as most professors will tell you, is basically when you're getting your footing and deciding who you are. Most people change majors or career paths at least once in that time...Will changing my major affect my fin aid?
I believe there's a limit on the TOTAL amount of aid that you can receive, so in that sense you would have used up some of your 'quota'. However, in general, your status for fin aid would be affected. With the exception of aids given to specific programs.
Probably not if you don't change from full time student status to part time status. However, if you need extra time to graduate it would be more expensive. To be safe call the fin aid office.
Yes, you can. All that matter to qualify is your HOUSEHOLD';S ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME.

To change majors or not to change majors? And if I do, to what? This is a little long. But please help. ?

Here's my dilema. I can't keep my GPA high enough to get the job I want in my major which is Pre-Med. I only have a 3.0, and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it up. From what I've read about medical schools is that they won't even consider accepting you unless you have a 3.5 or higher. So, obviously I will probably have to change my major. But the problem is that I don't know what to. I need help! Are there aptitude tests that I can take that will help to decide, and how do I talk to my parents about it? This sucks, because I really wanted to be a doctor, but I don't have the strength academically. Please help. And thanks in advance. To change majors or not to change majors? And if I do, to what? This is a little long. But please help. ?
Of you doing not so well in sciences, you should rethink this, I agree (yes you can do ';any major'; but you need an outstanding score on your MCAT). You can look at any number of careers in healthcare--there is a shortage nationwide in 4-year medical technologist, most kinds of therapists (respiratory, occupational, physical and others), all types of nursing and many others. Please consider those. They offer a good salary (not great) and you have many options. Check out at your school and those nearby for these opportunities. To change majors or not to change majors? And if I do, to what? This is a little long. But please help. ?
you don't have to major in premed in order to go to medical school. You could pick another major that you think you could maintain a 3.5 gpa or higher and do the courses that are needed for medical school (such as org. chem 1 etc)...you may need to research what courses are needed for any specific medical school you may want to go to.

We all fit into the puzzle and test which is Earth to find our own divinity, take care of the planet and each other.
Yes if you found the true path or way.

    CHANGING MY MAJOR...university of houston?

i called the university and they told me i can change it by going to changemymajor@uh.edu

so when i type it in a link sayin change major@uh.edu pops up

and im trying to figure out how do i go by doing this

cause im not finding the right thing

they said its no big deal just to email them

help plzzCHANGING MY MAJOR...university of houston?

They may mean that you need to EMAIL changemymajor@uh.edu.

I want to become a special education teacher?

and i am not sure how to go about it. I want to work specifically withj severely handicapped children. i am currently attending a community college that does not offer a degree to teach special needs children. However, they do offer an early childhood degree, and have been told getting dual certification is best. Should I change my major to that? I am planning on attending a four year university after achieving my associates and my community college, where i can earn my certification to teach special needs kids.

Currently, I am enrolled as a Liberal Arts General major, which is basically the broadest spectrum to take the basic courses needed for most degrees. However, if I were to switch, it would put to waste may of the 30 credits I have already achieved.

So my question- is it worth it to change majors from Liberal Arts General to Early Childhood Education and spend more time getting my associates? or Should i stick with my current major and concentrate on special education once i enroll in my four year university?I want to become a special education teacher?
Stick to your current major. Undergrad stuff doesn't really mean much. If you want to teach severe, profound students, then you will need your special ed degree and also a Profound certification, depending on the state in which you teach.

If you plan to teach anything but mild, moderate or profoundly intellectually disabled children, then it would be wise to get an elementary ed certification while you are getting your special ed degree. To teach students with SLD on an academic track, you now need to be Highly Qualified, which you can only do by getting your elementary ed credential as well.

It is fairly hard to get Profound jobs because a lot of very lazy teachers grab up these job and rot for many years. You would be better off to teach Life Skills at first or SLD to get your foot in the door.I want to become a special education teacher?
Special Ed and ECE are very different things (unless you're planning on going into Early Childhood Special Ed). I would stick with what you're doing now, then finish up with SPED certification at university.
ususally when they say dual cert--they mean having a 4 year degree in both

but it would still look good onyour resume if you wanted to work with young children who are severely handicapped to have the EC background instead of teh gen ed

  • How do I know if I am taking good pictures?

I have recently taken up photography as a hobbie. I really enjoy it and I am thinking about maybe changing my major to photography now. I am just curious how you know if you are taking good pictures. I don't want to change majors and then discover that I am horrible at photography. Please help! How do I know if I am taking good pictures?
I think It is important to ask yourself if you like your photographs and why do you like them. If you find that you like them only for the sake of the subject, you might want to think about different ways to compose, print, manipulate, etc.. an image. Also, do not rely too much on what others say. Photography, like any form or art is subject to a wide range of opinions and interpretations. With that said, try to think critically about other photographer's work, form your own opinions. Go to a museum or gallery and think about the photographers intention behind making the image, and what your reaction to it is.

No one works in a bubble, so make sure you look at a lot of photographers.

When you get more comfortable looking at work, I advise you to read the book: Criticizing Photographs by Terry Barrett

    available here:

    http://www.amazon.com/Criticizing-Photog

If you are serious about being a photographer, you have to allow for ample time to explore, experiement and evolve.

I also reccomend a book for new artists called Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland available here:

    http://www.amazon.com/Art-Fear-David-Bay

Good luck and do what yu love to do, In the words of Joseph Cambell ';Follow Your Bliss!';How do I know if I am taking good pictures?
Take them to a professional photographer and ask their opinion.
Double major. Its a good idea all the time.
Always try to take the picture where there is sufficient light.

Camera also matters a lot.So try to select a good camera with good colour sensitivity.Always beware about the background.

For example if you wear a black shirt,a red coloured object at the background will add beauty. So its a great necessity to understand about the colour matchings.
I think you should take some pictures whatever you think has been your best work hang it in your home and see what kind of reaction you get from people before you tell them is your own work. Also photography is really expensive hobby so be ready to spend some cash.
Just show your work around and find by yourself.
There are a lot of photography sites that you can join for free and other members will critique them. I'm a member at www.usa101.com and people are really helpful on that site.

I would also take everyone else's advice and critique your pictures yourself, have your family and friends to help you out, talk to other photographers...
being a photo major is hard

and uhhh....most photographers dont make it out there....

not to persuade u otherwise but if ur questioning urself that's a sign that ur probly not that good

How do i change my major? ?

right now my major is liberal arts and i hate it because i want to give something like early childhood education a chance .....How do i change my major? ?
talk to your advisor, the process of changing a major is different for every school. How do i change my major? ?

How Did Millions of Life Forms Evolve With Absolutely No Evidence of Major Change?

(A few anecdotal examples of mutations do not explain the missing transitional forms in millions of generations of thousands of creatures.)

Please, If you have nothing better to do but leave silly, non-sense, unintelligent, and rude comments , please skip this question! Thanks! How Did Millions of Life Forms Evolve With Absolutely No Evidence of Major Change?
evolution is the biggest hoax and unfortunatley wat too many otherwise intelligent people have fallen for it. I looked up the ';transitional forms'; list as someone suggested- I see lots of assumptions, losts of imagination and very little fact. I even had to laugh as some of the artists for some of these supposed life forms could take a lesson from my 4th-5th grade art class!

One of my favorite eries as of lte, is the ';Creatures that Defy Evolution'; there are 3 on DVD - check them out if you have not already- very cool! How Did Millions of Life Forms Evolve With Absolutely No Evidence of Major Change?
With no evidence? It'd be absolutely impossible.

That's how we know evolution is factual, we have millions of fossils that show the change. We have a fairly complete evolutionary tree based on the genetics of living creatures.
WOW that makes so much sense, gee your smart evolution must be wrong
Because the fossil record isn't perfect. If all human history were to be fossilised, the future paleontologists would probably get half a skeleton, one fossilised sock from the 20s, one Roman sword and one concrete coffin full of nuclear waste.

And that's humans. There were probably millions of prehistoric creatures we've found absolutely no trace of. However, we do have enough transitional forms (Archeopteryx, for example) to support evolution. It's not anectdotal, it's solid evidence.
Lots of evidence. You guys complained for 13 decades that there was no whale evolutionary evidence... 'til we found several transitionals from '78 onwards in Pakistan (Pakicetids - ~52 mya; Protocetids - ~45 mya; Dorudon - 38 mya) and Afghanistan (Remingtonocetids - ~48 mya).

Why don't try Google to find more... pick a subject and search.
So you're saying the working theory of evolution isn't good enough because... you think... what, that what they have DOESN'T actually work?

    *sigh* Yeah, complain about the gaps. And then when something is found to sit in the middle of the gap, you'll just say ';now there are two gaps!';
    i believe this kinda stuff...

personally i believe we've also mutated in our own ways...

it could be through genes changing over time...

i dont know im 16 just intrested and thinking of possiblities
Well, that seems to be a bit of a problem. And, there is a logical reason too. You see, there really aren't any transitional forms.
I am sure they have left plenty of evidence. Perhaps you fail to view it properly.
well i'm not a scientists but this is my analysis:

There would be recorded documents of evolution, if we were that smart.

Now our bodies aren't eveloving but our brains are,

slowly with each generation we are using more and more of our brians, and thta evolution is being recorded and documented.
They didn't evolve---they were all created by God just as the Bible says.
Fossilization preserves less than 1% of any given organic matter that has died. Seeing this, is it any wonder why exact transitional species may not be known in every instance? Don't forget the fact that many families/species branched off each other and later died out.

Yes, I am a Christian who believes in Evolution, including that you, yes YOU, evolved from hominids, which in turn many eons ago, evolved from single celled organisms. Ain't life grand?
Their form was successful. There are modern sharks that resemble sharks of 100,000,000 years ago, but not 450,000,000 years ago.

There thousands of non-anecdotal transitional forms.
    DRINK!

There are so few fossils to begin with (it is really, really hard to make a fossil) it is amazing how complete the record is... the fact that the samples line up as amazingly well as they do in line with evolutionary theory is overwhelming proof, statistically. But you would never let the facts get in the way of your silly beleiefs anyway.
You should study evolution. I took college courses in it and you obviously don't understand the evidence. Evolution is a proven fact, today and in the past. that is not to say that it doesnt require God as the intelligent designer. i am a Christian and I find no conflict with this and evolution. The Bible say ';God said let the earth bring forth the creatures of the sea'; That is evolution.

By the way evolution is NOT about mutation. It is about the survival of the children of successful parents. No child is exactly the same as it's parents and the ones that are better than their parents survive.
The purported lack of ';intermediate forms'; shows nothing except ignorance of the way that evolution works. Genetic information is stored in digital, not analog, form, so a one-bit change in a genetic code will have at least a miniumum effect on the descendants, but there is NO maximum: a one-bit change can activate all or part of an intron, or de-activate all or part of an exon, resulting in a change that is arbitrarily large. And this does not even count transposition or recombination errors (one of which is responsible for Down's syndrome). Evolution has been established science for a hundred years because it makes correct predictions, and it is now a proven fact (details on request).
Evolution did take place. Creation is a myth.
well, and I'm saying this with sincerity, if you truly wish to understand where the evidence came from, study it, study the evidence, then and only then will you come to an informed decision as opposed to a biased uninformed opinion
Study unbiased science and you'll get your answers. You'll find that you're presently incorrect and evolution is.

    _()_
I don't believe in the god creation or evolution, but I take the approach that other life forms do exist and can we see all of them, so how would one know that an invisible life does not live in you, that brings about your self awareness. Surely neither can be proofed or dis proved at the current time, its only what we accept to believe.
    Go to Google and type in ';list of transitional fossils.';

Have fun, and good luck learning.
did you ever notice the earliest animal supposedly is the trilobite... with VERY advanced eyes... I supposed evolved to elude PREDATORS... um... but there were no predators to elude...?????? perhaps the trilobites just got buried first in the flood

the reason you dont see revolutionary changes is because different animal types give rise to slight variations in its own type... not revolutionary changes ..each change requires its own advantage... this is flatly insufficient to explain the complexities and revolutionary changes we see

fossilization is indeed rare, none of the bones from the titanic just 70 years ago are left... it takes rapid burial and lots of water... lots of water.. lots of mud... a flood on a worldwide scale would leave lots and lots of fossils
I'm not being silly and I'm not being rude, but read your question. what evidence do you have? you said millions of life forms EVOLVE.... evolveing is not changing? you can't rely on the National Enquirer for facts. read a history book (or don't you believe what it says?) Scopes Monkey trial? Charles Darwin? ringing any bells? you do know that Creationism and Evolutionism are still being debated? you don't want rude or silly comments, but your asking a question which you've already decided the answer.
Your education in biology and paleontology needs to be updated. We now have a wealth of transitional fossils that show step by step changes in every stage between Paleozoic amniotes and modern species, including such interesting transitions as fish to tetrapod, dinosaur to bird, synapsid reptile to mammal, etc.

For example, here is a nice transitional sequence of fish to tetrapod with a few notes on the adaptative nature of each transitional form (note mya= millions of years ago). All of these forms lived in the shallow seas and inlets formed by the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea:

    Eusthenopteron 385mya

Had strong bones in the upper fins; adaptive for locomotion in shallow water.

    Gogonasus 380mya

Same skeleton as Eusthenopteron, but fin bones are stronger, denser, a little lower into the fin.

    Elpistostege, Livonia, Panderichthys 378 mya

Fin bones are now very low into fin. Still a useful adaptation for manuevering in a shallow sea.

    Tiktaalik 375 mya

Now has tiny beginnings of fingers at the end of the fins, and the beginning of a crude joint in the fin. Would have been adaptive for clawing its way through an inlet choked with vegetation.

    Elginerpeton, Obruchevichthys 370 mya

Proto-fingers are now a little longer

Sinostega, Metaxygnathus, Ventastega.Tulerpeton, Jakubsonia, Hynerpeton, Densignathus, etc. 365 mya

Finger bones even longer, some species have as many as 8 proto fingers; still not sturdy enough to come onto land, but very useful in manuevering through water choked with vegetation.

    Acanthostega 360mya

Same as before but stronger bones yet, with longer ribs; would have been capable of moving on land like a mud-skipper, going from tidal pool to tidal pool.

    Icthyostega 358mya

2 of the 8 fingers fusing into one finger, which will give its descendants 5 fingers, stronger forelims and enclosed ribs. This is the first fish that would have been capable of spending some time on land and feeding on land.

    Pederpes 355 mya

Very similar to above, but with enough small modifications that it may be called either proto amphibian or perhaps first true amphibian

    Casineria, Lethicus 350 mya

    Silvanerpeton 340 mya

Definitely amphibians that can easily walk on land. Still has a very fish-like body shape, but with many skeletal features of modern amphibians

But really the indisputable forensic proof of evolution comes from the burgeoning research in the field of molecular genetics. We are now determining exactly which nucleotide transcription error at what age resulted in which phenotypic variation in evolutionary history.
    Whale evolution?

Whale evolution is a topic that deserves special attention. Scientific American claims:

    Pakicetus: 鈥榚vidence鈥?for whale evolution?

Left: Gingerich鈥檚 Pakicetus reconstruction. [J. Gingerich, Geol. Educ. 31:140鈥?44, 1983]

Right: Actual bones found (stippled). Note nothing below skull. [Gingerich et al., Science 220:403鈥?, 1983]

Whales had four-legged ancestors that walked on land, and creatures known as Ambulocetus and Rodhocetus helped to make that transition [see 鈥楾he Mammals That Conquered the Seas,鈥?by Kate Wong, Scientific American, May]. [SA 83]

Here is an especially serious example of 鈥榟urling elephants鈥?by completely ignoring the fragmentary nature of the evidence.

This was a tricky problem for Darwin, but nevertheless he still had faith that whales evolved from land mammals. The paleontologist Phil Gingerich of the University of Michigan has publicly said, 鈥業t鈥檚 a real puzzle how whales originally evolved.鈥?But on the PBS Evolution series, he gives the impression that his fossil finds have gone a long way toward solving this puzzle.

Gingerich discovered in Pakistan a few skull fragments of a wolf-like creature that allegedly had an inner ear like a whale鈥檚. But this is far from conclusive. There wasn鈥檛 any post-cranial skeleton found, so we haven鈥檛 the faintest idea how it moved. However, this didn鈥檛 stop Gingerich from writing an article for schoolteachers with an illustration of an animal that had splashed into the sea and was swimming and catching fish, and looking convincingly like an intermediate between land animals and whales. He also claimed, 鈥業n time and in its morphology, Pakicetus is perfectly intermediate, a missing link between earlier land mammals and later, full-fledged whales.鈥?4 The diagram right shows the glaring contrast between reconstruction and reality.

New research since the PBS series was produced has blown away this reconstruction. This demonstrates an oft-repeated phenomenon in evolutionary paleontology. Many of the alleged transitional forms are based on fragmentary remains, which are therefore open to several interpretations, based on one鈥檚 axioms. Evolutionary bias means that such remains are often likely to be interpreted as transitional, as with Gingerich, and is also prevalent in ape-man claims. But when more bones are discovered, then the fossils nearly always fit one type or another, and are no longer plausible as transitional. It鈥檚 also notable that alleged intermediate forms are often trumpeted in the media, while retractions are usually muted or unpublicized.

    Pakicetus [Illustration: Carl Buell, %26lt;www.neoucom.edu/Depts/Anat/Pakicetid.ht鈥?

A prominent whale expert, Thewissen, and colleagues unearthed some more bones of Pakicetus, and published their work in the journal Nature.15 The commentary on this paper in the same issue says, 鈥楢ll the postcranial bones indicate that pakicetids were land mammals, and 鈥?indicate that the animals were runners, with only their feet touching the ground鈥?(see illustration left).16 This is very different from Gingerich鈥檚 picture of an aquatic animal! But the evolutionary bias is still clear, describing Pakicetus as a 鈥榯errestrial cetacean鈥?and saying, 鈥楾he first whales were fully terrestrial, and were even efficient runners.鈥?But the term 鈥榳hale鈥?becomes meaningless if it can describe land mammals, and it provides no insight into how true marine whales supposedly evolved.

Also, 鈥榮olid anatomical data鈥?contradict previous theories of whale ancestry. A Reuters news article reported in September 2001:

Until now paleontologists thought whales had evolved from mesonychians, an extinct group of land-dwelling carnivores, while molecular scientists studying DNA were convinced they descended from artiodactyls [even-toed ungulates].17

鈥楾he paleontologists, and I am one of them, were wrong,鈥?Gingerich said.

    Ambulocetus: missing link?

Top: Ambulocetus skeleton, as drawn in Miller鈥檚 book.

Middle: Ambulocetus reconstruction, as drawn in Miller鈥檚 book.

Bottom: Actual bones found (shaded). Note missing pelvic girdle.

Such candor is commendable, and it shows the fallacy of trusting alleged 鈥榩roofs鈥?of evolution. Pity that Gingerich is still committed to materialistic evolutionism.

    Ambulocetus

Ambulocetus is another popular example of a 鈥榤issing link,鈥?featured prominently in anti-creationist propaganda, such as the book Finding Darwin鈥檚 God, by Kenneth Miller鈥攖he 鈥楥hristian evolutionist鈥?who starred in PBS 1. In his book, Miller claimed, 鈥榯he animal could move easily both on land and in water,鈥?and presented a drawing of a complete skeleton and a reconstructed animal.18 But this is misleading, bordering on deceitful, and indicative of Miller鈥檚 unreliability, because there was no indication of the fact that far fewer bones were actually found than appear in his diagram. Crucially, the all-important pelvic girdle was not found (see diagram at right). Without this, it鈥檚 presumptuous for Miller to make that proclamation. His fellow evolutionist, Annalisa Berta, pointed out:

鈥?since the pelvic girdle is not preserved, there is no direct evidence in Ambulocetus for a connection between the hind limbs and the axial skeleton. This hinders interpretations of locomotion in this animal, since many of the muscles that support and move the hindlimb originate on the pelvis.19

    Basilosaurus

This serpentine and fully aquatic mammal has been known since the 19th century, but Gingerich discovered something new in some specimens in the Sahara. The PBS narrator pointed out that this desert area was under water once, and he described a 100-mile stretch of layered sandstone called the 鈥榲alley of the whales鈥?allegedly 40 million years old. The narrator theorizes that this valley was once a protected bay where whales came to give birth and to die. Here Gingerich discovered what he alleged were a pelvis, leg bones, and a knee cap, so he said they were evidence of 鈥榝unctioning legs鈥?and 鈥榙ramatic proof that whales were once fully four-legged mammals.鈥?br>

But this contradicts other evolutionists, including Gingerich himself! For example, the National Academy of Science鈥檚 Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science claimed, 鈥榯hey were thought to be non-functional鈥?(p. 18), and Gingerich himself said elsewhere 鈥榠t seems to me that they could only have been some kind of sexual and reproductive clasper.鈥?0 So these bones can be explained as a design feature, while the interpretation as 鈥榣egs鈥?reflects evolutionary wishful thinking.21

    Whale evolutionary sequence?

Alleged sequence of land mammal to whale transition

From Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science.

The PBS program claims that there is a series including Ambulocetus, Rhodocetus, etc., where the nostrils supposedly migrate to the back of the head. Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science contains a diagram (see right) on page 18. But when the mammal-to-whale series is examined, the sequence is not as smooth as they imply. For instance, this diagram failed to indicate that Basilosaurus is actually about ten times longer than Ambulocetus (and the fragmentary nature of the remains has been discussed already).

Another problem is that Basilosaurus has a number of features that mean it could not possibly have been ancestral to modern whales, e.g., body shape, skull structure, and tooth shape.

There is certainly no support for the program鈥檚 claim, 鈥榝ront legs became fins, rear legs disappeared, bodies lost fur and took on their familiar streamlined shape.鈥?Waving the magic wand of mutation/selection is hardly sufficient without an observable mechanism that would effect these changes.

Recently, John Woodmorappe analyzed the alleged transitions and found that their various characteristics did not change in a consistent direction. Rather, they are chimeras鈥攏on-whales with a few minor cetacean 鈥榤odules,鈥?inconsistent with the evolutionary prediction of a nested hierarchy but consistent with a common Designer.22

    Locomotion

PBS 2 also claims support for a transition from the way the mammal-to-whale fossil links moved. Marine mammals move through the water with vertical undulating movements of the spine, just as many fast-running mammals do on land. Fish move with sideways undulations instead. But this could be another common design feature of mammals, like milk or hair. It鈥檚 also doubtful whether this is a unique prediction of evolution; if whales used side-to-side movements, evolutionists could presumably have 鈥榩redicted鈥?this because the tails of land animals also swish sideways.

My book, Refuting Evolution, written to rebut Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science, has a chapter on alleged whale evolution that covers all this section in more detail, with full documentation. It is also available on the Creation CD-ROM produced by Answers in Genesis in answer to the PBS series.
Simply put evolution has never claimed there was ';major change.'; A series of very minor changes over a very long period of time results in radically different species.

There were never any half or transitional lifeforms - if you want to believe there are then every lifeform on the planet is a transitional lifeform: including us! We are still evolving slowly, in the last thousand years we've grown significantly taller and our jaws have been shrinking. Obviously there was no major or sudden change/shift, just slow incremental steps.

There were no sudden major leaps or mutations - any mutation that significant would kill the creature or prevent breeding. There are of course minor mutations in every genetic strand, both you and I are mutants to some degree. I'm taller than the rest of my family, and my sister is a faster sprinter than the rest of the family - those are mutations. Everything came about through very slow, gradual, incremental steps.
Okay. For years there was a so called missing Link in the human transition from ape to human. Then they found the skeleton named ';Lucy'; in Africa. She filled the transnational link from ape to mankind. Mystery solved. Like it or not the human race is decedent from apes.
Yes, another nail in the so called theory of evolution.

How do I change my major?

I applied to SFSU and said I wanted to major in Psychology. Now I want to Major on Business with a focus on Accounting and minor in Art. How do i change that? or do i just have to wait until I meet with an adviser to make my schedule? How do I change my major?
You will need to talk to people at the registrar's office for the correct procedure at it differs at every school.

How do you know when its time for you to make a major change?

I lived in NYC all my life. But even as a teenager I wanted to live in another state. I lived in NJ for 15 yrs. %26amp; loved it but came back to NY bcz I found a really nice apt %26amp; lived there for 7 yrs, moved out due to ridiculous rent increases %26amp; havent been able to find a nice reasonable place to live since 2001. I'm finding myself hating alot about NY, I dont go out to socialize in NY bcz I get aggravated with the trains, buses and crowds of people everywhere, also the noise %26amp; other things %26amp; I'm constantly thinking about leaving NY to go south but everything I know %26amp; love is here in NY. But I cant stop thinking about the south %26amp; how nice it is out there. Apts are quieter %26amp; cleaner, rents more reasonable %26amp; I can have a dog. I'd also like to live away from my family to start a new life on my own. NY is a great city but I've been here all my life %26amp; I'm not feeling it so much here anymore.

Does this mean its time for me to make a change? Or am I just being miserable?

In other words,How do you know when its time for you to make a major change?
when you make up your mind to make a the change give yourself a month and then do it. Also apartments in small cities are not always that great, look into it more.

If you want to do it make a plan, find a place to live, get a job there and then go and do it. Planing helps you feel like it isn't on a whim.

Good luck. How do you know when its time for you to make a major change?
When it no longer feels right.
you've known it was time for a change a long time ago, you just don't want to take responsibility for your decision and all it's possible ramifications. Time to grow up now. Nothing risked means nothing is gained, nothing gets any better.
I think based upon your question you should leave. You listed a lot of cons on why you dislike newyork, but never any pros. It if you can't think of a good reason to stay than move. One reason why you don't want to leave is because you spent your whole life in new york and it's apart of you. it can be difficult leaving that behind when you move. Unless there is one really great reason that tops all the bad reasons for staying in new york you should leave.
you sound like you are ready for a change! you should take a mini trip to the place of your choice to check it out first and see where you would like to live. ,then go for it and bon voyage
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Though that is a cliche, I believe it.

Changing your residence may not necessarily change everyting - there are annoyances and disadvantages to living anywhere.

You may well need a change in scenery, it is hard for me to say based on not knowing you. But just don't effect your whole life to be 100% better just because you move - becoming happier takes more than a change of address. I am learning this myself.

    But good luck!
Ditto to what everyone else said - It can be scary to move to a new place and away from everything familiar but it can also be a great adventure. I take it your single and do not have debt holding you in place so that is an opportunity that a lot of people would love to have.

I spent 3 years in NYC myself and I loved every second of it, that city is just exciting, but I was ready to go when I finished school and am glad I moved also.

Living in different places kind of rounds a person out, gives them perspective and a way about them that is different then someone who has just grown up and lived in the same place. I am not saying it is better, just different.

I grew up in other countries then here in the good old USA and I will tell you that people who were born and raised here {in the states} do not have a very encompassing world view ?the states is like living in the Magic Kingdom. If I was in your shoes I would get a passport, a backpack, and some good walking shoes and see some of the world.

    - Inez
I think you sound like you are ready for a change. But please do some planning before, and take into account that things might not be as ';perfect'; as you wanted them to be.

I guess it only takes a lot of courage and responsability. It can make your life great, if you decide it to.
